New play equipment inspired by Bassetlaw’s links to the Mayflower, the ship that transported Pilgrims from Plymouth to America in 1620, will be taking shape Kings’ Park over the next few weeks.
The new equipment will have a variety of features including nets, slides, game and search panels, stepping platforms, climbing walls and talk tubes to encourage and support children’s learning and development.
The bespoke equipment has been designed to appeal to children aged between 3 and 14 years old, and work to dismantle the old timber multi-play unit and build the new play area is already underway.
Councillor Julie Leigh, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “The Mayflower themed play facility will be a real asset to Kings’ Park. The equipment is unique to Bassetlaw and is a true reflection of the Mayflower which represents such an important piece of our history.”
“The Mayflower ship apparatus has many features which encourage children’s learning and communication, as well as inclusive and accessible features such as wheelchair friendly ramps to allow children the opportunity to play and learn cooperatively together – it will be a welcome addition to Retford’s award-winning park.”
Residents and visitors to Kings’ Park have already shared their support for the new equipment and its ties to the heritage of the Pilgrims through a series of community consultations that took place in the summer of 2019.
The Mayflower play ship will replace the Lapsett timber multi-play unit which is being removed due to its age and condition. This area will be cordoned off as works take place to ensure the safety of those visiting the park. It is expected that the Mayflower play ship will be in place and ready for use by the Easter Bank Holiday. The new equipment has been funded by Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL).
Visitors to Kings’ Park and any other open spaces within Bassetlaw are reminded to continue to follow any Covid-19 guidance from the Government. Visitors should wash their hands thoroughly before and after attending any play park and should maintain social distancing from other people.
